An Operatic Recital by Renata Tebaldi
This is an album from the early 1950's that has seen a lot of abuse,
but the quality of FFRR, and Miss Tebaldi, still shine through.

Sir Adrian Boult conducting the Philharmonic Promenade Orchestra
The Planets by Gustav Holst
I definative recording from 1953 of the music that launched
a thousand John William's film scores.
incidently, Sir Adrian Boult conducted the premire of this piece in 1918,
and you can hear that he knows exactly what he's doing.

-Mascagni
A mono recording dating from circa 1951
A great, dirt-covered find.  After much cleaning, a gem has been revealed!
The brilliance of the performance is equalled by the brilliance of the recording.

Based on a short story, Mascagni's opera is a compact, musical gem -- rather like a three act opera, without the first two acts.  If you don't like opera, give this one a try.  Despite its effective storytelling, it's short on words, long on great music.

Two further notes of interest; The cover art was painted by a William Ward Beecher, and these are the finest MPEG3 files I have made so far -- they have the smallest file size, and the highest audio quality.  Abundanza!
Prelude
The action takes place in a village square in Sicily.
Triddu sings a song of his love for Lola.
Scene 1
The curtain rises, it is Easter morning.
Countrymen, countrywomen and children head across the square to the church.
Scene 2
Santuzza asks Mamma Lucia about her son, Triddu.  Alfio, a teamster who is married to Lola, enters the town.
Scene 3
Alfio tells Lucia that he has seen Triddu lingering near his cottage.  He is not happy
The people inside the church are heard singing, Santuzza sings along fervently from outside, because she is not allowed to enter - she has recently been excommunicated due to her failed engagement to Triddu.
Santuzza tells Lucia the back story: Triddu went to war engaged to Lola, he returned to find her married to Alfio.  He started a relationship with Santuzza, but had recently cast her aside.
Scene 4
Triddu arrives.  He and Santuzza argue.
Lola arrives, heading to church.
Triddu and Santuzza's argument reaches its climax.
Scene 5
Santuzza tells her suspicions to Alfio.  He rages.
Intermezzo
If you listen to no other part of this opera, listen to this.
Scene 6
It is evening.  The people are leaving church now.  There is tension in the town.  Triddu tries to defuse the situation by encouraging them to join him in a glass of wine.
Scene 7
Alfio enters and challenges Triddu to a duel, he will meet him behind the house.
Triddu tells his mother that he is stepping outside for a little while.  He asks her to pray for him the way she did when he went to war.
A scream tells the end of the story.
